Absolutely amazing. Was in tears within a few pages, and in awe the whole time. Taneja beautifully conveys the immensity of grief and trauma (both specific and historical/racial). She also negotiates (in the most thoughtful and stunning way I think I’ve ever seen) the complexities and political questions that surround the act of writing itself. By the final stages, the book is a constant mix of well-researched literary/political criticism (to do with the prison system, ‘terrorism’, and the stories we are told about them both) and highly personal, expressive poetic prose. The most impressive thing is how Taneja brings you out of the despair of ‘the event’ to a nuanced but intense hope which I can’t find the words for. I ended the book wanting to immediately re-read it for every little detail I missed, wanting to delve into all the other books it cites, and wanting to go struggle for a more just and caring world.
