The author’s note says that this book started out as a short story, so I guess that’s why the storyline felt streamlined but also fleshed out. Fe Fe’s vivid memories of her last summer with her friends are marred by gentrification, shootouts, beatdowns, and gang affiliations. After things come to a head around Fourth of July, a mystery that we didn’t know needed to be solved is unfolded. This dealt with heavy topics and plenty of foreshadowing like Hold You Down by Tracy Brown–with similar vibes but very different plots–and I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
