This book filled me with nostalgia for something I never had.
As a teen Shiloh was kinda a pain in the butt. Opinionated and deliberately othering herself. I was much the same. I want to think/ hope that people loved me fiercely despite it (or because it) just like Shiloh.
Adult Shiloh seems much calmer and put together. I hope that I am calmer and more put together too. Shiloh’s personality is very similar to mine. Alone and kinda lonely, but mostly okay. She has some friends but not too many. She is kind of social but under duress.
I guess what I am trying to say is that the characters were compelling and felt very real to me. But also, aspirational.
The miscommunication in this book happened in the past, when they were literal teenagers, so it is believable. It seemed like it would continue but they talked it out right after the first mix up. We saw actual growth on the page.
This book was an illustration of real and sustained loved. It was wonderful to read.
