In chapter 1 there is a scene where a man is in the stocks and everyone being so cruel to him. I almost DNF. Nothing that they did was so terrible, but casual cruelty in a real sort of novel always gets me.
And this book vacillated between too real for me and then comfortable in fantasy and then back. The way all the Puritans behaved felt so icky. Like Abitha said, what was most terrible about the people wasn’t that they were cruel, it was that they were cruel thinking they were actually good.
“As at least cruelty was a thing that could be pointed out, confronted. But this belief, this absolute conviction that this evil they were doing was good, was God’s work—how, she wondered, how could such a dark conviction ever be overcome?”
I felt so much for Sarah Carter. After everything she sacrificed and endured to see Abitha in the end. I would’ve gone mad I think.
