Incidents Around the House by Josh Malerman
4.0
What a surprise. I haven't been a fan of Malerman's works previously, so I wasn't going to pick this one up. But it was there, available at my library for audio so I thought, ah, go on then, I'll DNF early if it's shit. It wasn't! To my utter surprise, I quite enjoyed it.
At first I cringed hearing the child's voice, and almost quit right then and there. I can not stand child narrators, I can barely tolerate child characters.
I am glad I pushed through. It won't be a memorable all-time favourite, but it was a nice time. It even had a couple of clever quotables. The writing and the "message" is simplistic but at the very least it offered more than just the surface level horror. Above all, it was fun and compelling to read. I wanted to get to the end to find out what happened. That really is everything a 'good book' needs to achieve, right?
