Mislaid in Parts Half-Known by Seanan McGuire
3.0
I expected more dinosaurs. I didn't think that I particularly wanted dinosaurs, but then they weren't really there and I found I actually did want them.
I think McGuire's characters are best when they are the singular focus of a story. When they are all thrown together the group dynamic it just doesn't always mesh and leans more into the themes of fantasy adventure than the more creepy haunting fantasy of the solo stories.
I think focus is the real enemy in this book. McGuire does character driven storytelling incredibly well and when given too many characters to work with you can see her attention bouncing around. I think that is why Kade is always my favourite in the group stories because he is designed to keep the group together and due to this really pulls focus. I worry after this book's dip into his story that a solo adventure is probably never going to happen. It felt very much like the loose ends were tied up and although I liked the storytelling, I am disappointed that such an interesting character has been left aside.
Overall, I still liked the story, I liked the characters, I was happy to be given more Antsy and Kade, but it definitely isn't my favourite in the series.
