Beautiful setting but the FMC (Kidane) is so insufferable that I found myself rooting more so for the villainous MMC (Susenyos) and wished he’d had his own POV. Their dynamic turned my stomach at first but I later came on board, which is a testament to the author’s pen game. The YA factor really becomes a liability when she refuses to keep it player as she openly explores the disappearance of her sister (June), but the worldbuilding and beautiful prose anchor the plot. The ending was convoluted, but I can honestly say I’ve never read a book like this and am happy I didn’t DNF.
Graphic: Suicidal thoughts, Violence, Blood, Grief, Murder, and Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Emotional abuse and Torture
Minor: Child abuse, Stalking, Car accident, and Fire/Fire injury
