Palace Walk by Naguib Mahfouz
5.0
He was like a mother cat which appears to be devouring her kittens when she is actually carrying them.
Wow. You will grow to know this despicable character so thoroughly that his tragedy becomes your tragedy despite his cruelty. The inner monologues of this book are actually so insightful because it is otherwise a time and place completely unknowable to me. I was amazed by how decisively the author writes parallel stories of the confinement of women and the confinement of colonization. While the volume of this book can be burdensome, there are plenty of plot beats to keep you coming back for more.
