The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

4.0

*whole extra star just for the concept of Southern Manors and all the subversive satire therein

Me: I don't read thrillers!

Also Me: *reviews two thrillers in a row.

This isn't really a thriller though as it is a retelling of [b:Jane Eyre|10210|Jane Eyre|Charlotte Brontë|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1557343311l/10210._SY75_.jpg|2977639], and the plot is familiar enough one has a sense of where things are going. However, there was enough twisting of things that I was invested in what the actual heck was going on underneath everything. It's a short read, and I finished it in one sitting. I don't know how this will sit with FANS of Jane Eyre. I'm definitely not one. If you like the story as is and want a modern retelling that keeps the plot exactly the same, this is not the book for you. I was delighted by all the twists. (It's not getting a higher rating because I was kind of bored for much of the first 1/3 of the book as Jane wriggled her way into Eddie's life.)
