Mark Mazower's 'Dark Continent' presents an overview of 20th century European history with a primary focus on the struggle between the three ideologies of democracy, communism, and fascism with the pervading view that the eventual triumph of liberal democracy was not inevitable. As someone with a particular interest in this period, I found it an interesting read but at the same time this book offered no new insight or information that I could not have found elsewhere.
