I have very mixed feelings about this book. It definitely had some interesting commentary, but on a technical level it definitely could be better. I wasn’t a fan of the prose, and my biggest problem was just that I couldn’t feel attached to the story or any of the characters. Also, it was a lot smuttier than I expected from a non-romance book, which isn’t necessarily bad, I just personally hate reading smut so it made several parts of the book uncomfortable for me to read.
Hands down my favorite part of the book and what brought it from two to three stars was how unabashedly queer it was. This book was clearly written FOR queer people. It is full of queer vernacular and references to queer media. It is about problems within the queer community separate from its relationship to straight people. I also have never read a book with a he/him lesbian before despite them being a formative part of the lesbian community. Even if this book specifically wasn’t for me, I’m glad a book like this is finally able to exist and I hope to see many more in the near future.
