I hate that I didn’t like this more, because I really, really wanted to. But it felt so contrived, and so unearned at every turn. The MC was borderline unlikable for no reason. There were so many arbitrary things that just happened in this story that didn’t make sense or feel earned, based on the information we were given. Also, the theme established early in the book is not the one the MC actually learns in the end. It’s almost like the message shifts on its axis at the midpoint and it just felt strange. Also, there’s one HUGE issue with the MC not sharing information with his best friend for, again, absolutely no reason that makes sense. It’s like things just happen in this book to move a plot along rather than character dynamics and choices actually driving the story. There are cute moments, as well as an adorable love interest that no one in this book deserves, so that was a saving grace here. I think some people might love this, but I was hoping for something a little deeper.
Side note: ALL of the screenplay stuff could have been cut from this. It really slowed down the narrative and, half the time, I had absolutely no clue what was going on and couldn’t remember previous events from the last screenplay section. Weird choice. Probably could have been included on its own as a bonus feature, but it really adds nothing to the story and almost feels like an afterthought (because there are maybe three occasions in the main narrative where the character writing the script actually mentions details from it).
