Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan
5.0
This tiny book is a complex one that explores so many topics including the vulnerability of women, what it means to engage with what you know, privilege, generosity, empathy, activism, parentage.
Set in Ireland in the 1980’s, Bill was saved from a life of destitution. Born to an unwed teenage mother, a well off woman in town takes them in. He grows up to a have a business and family of his own, but his mind churns. Made aware of the Magdalene Laundries and the poor treatment of young, unwed mothers, he’s faced with an agonizing decision.
The scenes are vivi. Bill’s internal dilemma fees close and relatable, and the depravity of society makes this book a modern day “It’s a Wonderful Life”.
