Abandoned But Not Alone by Nicole Dykes

5.0

Well, here I am reviewing another book by this author that I love so much. It's always harder for me to review these stories because I want to do them justice and not just say wow what a nice story just because I'm a fan of the author.

Of all the books in this series, I think this is the one that touched me most deeply, at least so far (Andrew's story has yet to be written and I think that one is going to break me completely).

The pain that Henry felt and still feels at being abandoned is so palpable that you can feel it through the pages. Because he was abandoned over and over again, by his parents, by a system that is not enough, by Maggie. He believes that there is something about him that makes people unable to love him. Something that makes them reject him. And yet, despite the blows that life gives him, he continues to fight and move forward, first for Maggie, and now for his daughter. And I think that makes him one of the strongest person I have ever read. And in that fight and at his lowest point, is that he arrives at Ben's gym, and where the first spark of hope ignites in his life.

Felix has his own problems, small ones, but they do come to the surface from time to time. He feels less than his family members. They are all high achievers, with careers dedicated to helping people, and he feels that he is not up to their standards. But that doesn't stop him from helping everyone he can. He goes to the shelters and spends time with the people there who need help and a smile to brighten their day a bit, and he also tries to help out at the gym, always with the same smile and cheerful attitude. And it is because of this desire to help that he reaches out to Henry the second time he sees him, with a baby in his arms and looking lost and with an expression of utter defeat in his eyes.

And so their story begins. At first Henry is reluctant and has a hard time letting down his defenses, he was disappointed too many times to trust again, but nevertheless, he deeply feels that he can trust Felix and little by little he begins to open up. Their love blossoms and grows stronger day by day, and eventually Henry realizes that he needs to completely heal in order to live a full life together with Felix and Hazel and ends up reaching out to the support group to share his experience and begin to overcome his trauma.

As I said before, this story touched me more deeply than the others, because it is always hard to see how children are abandoned and suffer at the hands of those who should protect them, but luckily, this particular story ends up being one of strength and overcoming, and so much love.

And before I close, I want to say that I know a lot of people will dislike Maggie, and at first I did too, but I finally got over it, because you have to accept that not everyone can be a parent, not everyone should be, and I think she tried to do what best she could, within her abilities. In her reasoning, she felt that Hazel was a gift that she could give Henry, the only thing she had to give him, because inside her there was only emptiness and he deserved someone who would love him unconditionally. And that was Hazel.

Another incredible story, emotional, sometimes painful, but it shows that there is still good in the world and that sometimes you just have to reach out and accept the help you need.

And now to wait for Andrew!

I was given an advanced story and voluntarily wrote a review.
