The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez

4.0

One of the most unique and experimental narrative styles and prose I have seen in the fantasy/science-fiction genre. This story mixes 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person narration while also following a frame structure, which is something that I have only seen in poetry or pure modernist and postmodernist fiction books, and I was pleasantly surprised by how the author decided to apply this technique to his book. While the plot itself may not be the most groundbreaking, the author's beautiful prose, great characterisation, and storytelling elevate Spear above other recent releases I have read and make it memorable. The form enhances the content and both work together so well.

This is my first time reading one of Simon Jimenez's works, but I plan to read his previous book and follow his future releases. I truly appreciated his creativity and how refreshing his style felt while reading, and I hope he continues in this manner.
