This book is  translated from the original Japanese. There were sometimes that I felt were translated weirdly. The most glaring was when it would say that Kokoro’s mom was “pressurizing” her. “Pressuring” her would’ve made more sense.
There was a lot of talk about the honorifics added to names. How someone felt when they added a chan to their name. I looked them up, but it made me wish I was reading the book instead of listening to it.
Lastly, the feelings these Japanese characters had about being school dropouts felt very foreign to me. There was so much shame from having dropped out. Not that I think there isn’t shame in American culture, but it seemed to acute in the book and like culturally shameful in a different way.

Now for the story, it was very interesting. I had times where I guessed what was going on, then then my guess would seem to be disproven, only for later for me to have been right all along.
I knew they must’ve been in different timelines the moment that Ureshino was shocked that Kokoro thought that Kitajima was pretty. I thought, “oh she must be an old lady to him. They are in different years.”

Later that seemingly disproven only to be right all along. The final twist I didn’t see until the very end. Actually several of the final twist. There were more than one.
I loved how it ended how it began. It felt very tidy.
