You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

I jumped at the chance to borrow the audiobook version from my library. I normally don’t listen to audiobooks, but it was available so I went for it. It was a very enjoyable experience! I felt like Alaska Jackson really brought the characters to life.
I loved Liz so much! She was so refreshing. A quiet studious character who just wants to get to college and her future.
This book reminded me of a 90’s romcom, but queer. Which made me so so so happy. Y’all seriously don’t know how much I love cliche stories made queer. We deserve them just as much as the straights!
For a brief moment in the beginning I thought this might be a love triangle, but thankfully it wasn’t. I adored the friendship between Jordan and Liz. I loved how he was always there for her and that he was so comfortable with her being bi. I actually really loved how Liz was already out to herself, and her friends and family. I can totally relate to being out to the people you care about, but not wanting to broadcast it to everyone. It was fun watching Liz evolve and become more comfortable with herself. Plus, Mack and Liz are SO CUTE. I’m lowkey sad that Kittridge isn’t an actual band.
Liz’s relationship with her family was heartwarming. It was interesting seeing her perspective as a sibling to someone who is chronically ill. She loves her brother (who has sickle cell anemia) and even wants to become a hematologist.
The only real gripe I have with this novel is that Liz’s friends Stone and the other one that I can’t remember her name.. Those two just seemed like kind of pointless characters? They didn’t seem to have any substance to them.
I really really enjoyed this book and think almost anyone would love it!
