A Cry in the Night by Mary Higgins Clark

5.0

4.5/5 stars

I've been sleeping on this book! I've had it on my shelf for a few years now and while it is a very old title (from 1982), I was SHOOK and the twists/shocking plot points had me reacting out loud!!

I'd really call this a psychological thriller. I thought I was going into a slow burn mystery Agatha Christie style but that wasn't the case. I've read many psychological thrillers and this one ranks at the top of all of those. Yes, it's a bit dated in a few descriptions (the clothing, the phone, making a "person to person" phone call), but the thriller and angst and dark twisty moments are THERE and then some!!

Jenny thinks she's met her Prince Charming and while her gut was screaming at her, she didn't listen. Erich gaslights her the whole time, she thinks she's losing her mind, and then she starts putting 2 and 2 together (which is why I docked a half star because one minute she didn't know what to do and the next she starts putting it all together). Watching these events unfold was dramatic and had me on the edge of my seat. I had a hard time going to sleep after reading this because it was just THAT good and I couldn't stop thinking about it!

I had gotten away from reading thrillers because they all seem them same.....maybe it's time to read some BACK backlists because the new stuff nowadays just doesn't cut it.
