The Dutch House by Ann Patchett
4.0
This book was very well written and almost artistic in a way. I think the author took aspects of historical fiction but shaped them to feel current; it was easy to understand the perspectives of the characters. I think that the author also gave each character a unique identifying trait. Fluffy was the nanny who knew what living in the house was like when Danny and Maeve were young, sandy and Jocelyn where the sisters that Danny didn’t really understand and appreciate till he had to leave, Danny was the real estate agent who went to medical school - which I find pretty cool how the author incorporated things about health- and Maeve was the “cool aunt” with diabetes (which was also interesting because you rarely see chronic illnesses talked about in a realistic way in books). I find that I was a little confused in the beginning of the novel, but as I read more, I grew to enjoy it and comprehend all the complex characters more. The ending was also perfect and really tied off Maeve and Danny’s story in the Dutch House.
