DIE is a mature and visually rich graphic novel whose world offers something many graphic novels miss: a depth in its exploration of the fantasy genre that rewards rereading. Understanding the influences and call backs woven into the story are as enjoyable as the story itself, but the cleverness of the "game world" appeals directly to fans of the role-playing format. No wonder then the author offers the game as an actual document for those who would like to put their own stamp on it -- or foot in it, as it were. The essays compiled in the back of this graphic novel, while illuminating many of the creators' influences, may have been better in their serialized issues: every role-player has their awakening to the format, and in bulk these can lean toward indulgent, but overall, a story full of surprises, mysteries, and revelations that reward the reader with each unveiling.
