Jasmine and Jake Rock the Boat by Sonya Lalli

4.0

finished this in less than 48hours!!

if i have to review this through taylor swift songs, it will be

you're on your own kid meets this is me trying meets daylight

what i really enjoyed in this one is how authentic Jasmine Randhawa's voice as an adult who is afraid to admit the truth that she is struggling financially

another thing is how this book tugged at my heartstrings during that scene when jasmine yearned for physical touch from her parents after years and years of being scolded for not being the ideal daughter they want

this book shed some light to the overused topic in Asian lit that is how parents of our generation are always so strict when it comes to parenting - this book was able to balance how the MC acknowledged the shortcomings her parents had when she was young while also allowing some space for them to grasp progressive views that our generation had been advocating for

the romance is there but i'm more invested in jasmine as a main character

overall, what a surprising pick and i definitely enjoyed this one
