When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion by Julie Satow

4.0

Journey back in time before online shopping existed and most women shopped for clothing at department stores. Now a dying breed in 2024, department stores used to be the cornerstone of fashion. From limited runs and exclusive labels, we have lost a lot of what made this time special with fast fashion and internet knockoffs.

What I really enjoyed about Julie Satow’s When Women Ran Fifth Avenue was that she deep dived not only the history of the department store business model but also into the lives of the women who helped make it successful. Dorothy Shaver and Geraldine Stutz aren’t household names, but they should be. Their impacts as rising women in business was inspiring and educational.

I did eye reading and ear reading and I enjoyed both. The pacing was strong, the timeline well laid out and expanded and the details kept the story cohesive from start to finish. Loved it!
