The Unforgettable Loretta, Darling by Katherine Blake
4.0
So this one started off really interesting. It grabs you with this resourceful and snarky character. A young girl who has decided to start over, with a new name, in Hollywood where she hopes to become a famous makeup artist. Loretta is instantly likeable and we get to watch her adjust to Hollywood. I loved that the book really highlighted the gender inequalities. It becomes a central focus as Loretta sees the way that Hollywood favors the men and leaves the women to feel powerless. The book has a whole range of misfits that Loretta befriends and each one of them really helps her to develop as a person. I wanted to love this book because who doesn't love a female character ready to exact revenge on those who did her dirty. But, it takes a long time before we ever get close to that dynamic... and it's not even the focus.
We have an awkward romance thrown in. I wanted to enjoy that side story but it just felt so sporadic and off that it was hard to get into it. The romance dynamic comes out of nowhere honestly. The friendships are great because every single person is someone who had to adjust in some way to Hollywood and we see Loretta take a lesson from each of them. It hits on some very tough and uncomfortable topics. Yet, the summary and the book didn't really line up as well as I hoped. It seemed like her band of misfits were off to seek revenge together but really it's just Loretta. The misfits are just people who help her adapt to Hollywood. I also must say that at times the book seemed incredibly unclear and I struggled to keep up with what was happening.
