Divergent by Veronica Roth

5.0

I've wanted to read Divergent ever since I saw a review about it on Tumblr. The longer I put off reading it to do other things the fandom continued to grow and so did the excitement around the book. After hearing nothing but positive things about this book, I was certain I'd fall in love with it like everyone else and I was right.

In this book (the first in a trilogy) we are introduced to a world where everyone is divided into factions either through birth or choice. At 16 you have to take a test which helps decide whether you should stay in your faction or if you should join a new one. Beatrice/Tris faces this decision however it doesn't run as smoothly for her as it did for everyone else.

This book captures your attention from the start and unlike many other books, it manages to keep your attention. Just reading about this broken world from the start was enough to keep me interested, I wanted to know more about this place and how it all happened. Not only is there a great setting for this story but fantastic characters that help it along. Tris is a strong girl, but she is only 16 and has lived a sheltered life compared to others which also makes her vulnerable. I also love how Roth would make her do or say some things that teenage girls do to remind us that despite what she's doing, she really is still just a child. It made the character more real. Another character that I love is Four. Since we were introduced to him I made some predictions about his character that were later confirmed, however there was still great depth to him.

I hated having to put this novel down, it was so easy to be sucked into such a fractured place where you had to quickly learn to survive. My favourite part was the second phase of training. With the situation Tris found herself in I felt my heart race and palms tingle with anxiety as though I was watching it first hand.

Lovers of dystopian novels will not be disappointed with this and would want to race through the other books when they can. I have put off reading this for a while but I won't be making the same mistake with Insurgent.
