Mist of Midnight by Sandra Byrd
5.0
Byrd creates a down-to-earth heroine in Rebecca Ravenshaw who has the relatable balance of gutsy passion, clumsy social skill, good-hearted deeds, and gnawing insecurities. This historical fiction novel is rich in lovely descriptions and lively comparisons.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres so I definitely enjoy Sandra’s writing, and I could hardly wait to get my hands on Mist of Midnight. Having read my fair share of Gothic romance classics, it was fun to read such a story more freshly written. I was particularly taken with one phrase that Byrd wrote in relation to her protagonist and the man she’s falling for, “...the gentle melting of the edges of two people into one, a comfort I’d never expected to feel.”
The plot unfurled in a timely pace, laced with the unknown and the tension of lovers that are seemingly going to miss each other through a series of miscommunications and the press of time. Byrd used every character and scene to its best advantage to enhance the intrigue of imposter and true heiress.
This book is for you if you enjoy classics, have an interest in Indian and British history, and prefer a protagonist with surprising strengths.
