A Place Like Home: Short Stories by Rosamunde Pilcher

3.0

I am a HUGE Rosamunde Pilcher fan. I own all of her books and almost every short story collection she published. I regularly re-read them. I am not a teenager nor did I read her books as a teenager. (I mention that because several reviews are from readers who are/did.)

That being said, this volume is a disappointment. If you have read anything by Pilcher, you will instantly recognize the names, characters, places, and plot. You will know how almost every story ends as soon as you begin. There's nothing new here; you can see how she used almost everything in these stories for her later books. Which is fine, but I didn't need to read these. They also haven't aged well since they are almost all about a young woman who needs a man.

There's a good reason why most of these were never published: They don't work well even for short stories. They are unfinished and lacking in development. You struggle to care about any character or really understand who they are and as a result, you don't care. As I said, I own almost all her short story collections and the majority of her short stories are contained and satisfying to read. These aren't.
