A Sweet Sting of Salt by Rose Sutherland

adventurous mysterious medium-paced

3.5

A solid and sweet read! A great mix of historical fiction and magical realism (though most of the fantastical elements come at the end), I particularly enjoyed the beautiful setting and tone. The characters and plot were good, though not exactly ground breaking. I’m not familiar with the original Selkie Wife story, but knew the gist and was pleased with the way this took that gist and ran with it. I didn’t love the final conflict
where Jean was incredibly upset with Muirin for saving the seal skin
, it just felt like an extra plot beat too long. But on the whole I’d recommend for an atmospheric and sweet historical, magical, and sapphic romance.
