LA PESTE: BEST SELLER by Albert Camus

5.0

I would give zero stars to this particular imprint, so let me warn you away from it - there are no page numbers! It's some kind of scan of some other edition. Lame.

The book? Well, my goodness. Camus devastates me, writing so prosaically, so sparely, about the darkest darknesses of the human condition. I only really know The Stranger (read it in French and English) and have engaged, but never really read, The Myth of Sysphus. La Peste is not as spare as [b:L'Étranger|15688|L'Étranger|Albert Camus|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1332596551l/15688._SY75_.jpg|3324344], but certainly has more going on. In the end, notwithstanding the cautionary notes about the lurking possibility of the plague's return (doubly relevant in these days of Covid and virulent racism/nationalism), I find myself buying Camus' view that humans are more good than bad as we make our way in this life of love, suffering an exile.

Note to self: I want to read this in English, too, to see what I missed. ;-)
