An Autobiography by Angela Y. Davis
hopeful
reflective
medium-paced
5.0
"I was tired of ephemeral ad hoc groups that fell apart when faced with the slightest difficulty; tired of men who measured their sexual height by women’s intellectual genuflection."
This is still a fabulous, fabulous book - even better with a new, reflective introduction. Davis writes with humour, and compelling narrative, but keeps focus on the meaning of her life. I can't think of another writer who combines such nuance with such certainty. There is hope simply in existing in the same world as someone this warm and determined.
In the new itnroduction Davis addresses her resignation from the CP, and her embrace of the liberatory possibilities of feminism and intersectionality. Even in the original, however, she has memorable capacity to hold those who around her to account.
This isn't just a book which is fun to read, it makes you want to be better.
