ARC REVIEW
I am privileged to have been chosen to receive and review an advanced copy of The Gargoyle and the Songbird. It was released at the end of September and here’s my take. If you are a fan of cozy fantasy, slow burn romance then pick up your e-reader or head to your nearest bookstore and pick up a copy for yourself!
Ecco is a siren just starting to come to terms with the fame associated with her musical career when she sees a shadowy figure lurking in her home. Her manager overrides her protests and gets her a private security detail in the form of Graeme, a surly gargoyle who is warring with his own personal issues and has little tolerance for his bubbly new job. Ecco’s whirlwind, upbeat personality may finally have found its match in the sullen, stoney Graeme, that is if she can keep her attraction for him under control.
Unlike some cozy fantasy books, The Gargoyle and the Songbird moves along at a quick pace. The plot flows quickly and easily which helps to keep the reader engaged and turning pages. And while this is the second book of a series, I did not read the first book and I did not feel that anything was lacking from or confusing in the plot. That being said, the warm hug this book gave me was something that definitely made me go looking for the first book and the next.
This book also used multiple point of view narration, which is always one of my favorite writing tools. We get to see various scenes from the POV of both Ecco and Graeme. This allows for us to see the relationship build on both sides.
This book did focus heavily on the romance and less on the protector plot that it was set up for, something that is acknowledged by the main characters on several occasions before leaning back in for another kiss. Several of the traditional romance tropes are covered including slow burn romance, grumpy x sunshine, forced proximity, touch her & die, and of course one bed.
Overall a nice cozy romance to settle down with any time of the year.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
