I LOVE how flawed Marco and Luís are! Somehow they just compliment each other and it works SO WELL! The romance is just swoony too! BUT THE DRAMA! Gah, I can’t say too much or I’ll spoil something!
I think my favorite things from this book are:
- Luís’s queerness
- the trauma and mental health
Seeing Luís express their queerness was absolutely amazing. The combination of their pronouns was something I hadn’t come across before and it was a great way for me to learn more about the their importance to people. Plus, Elen blended Luís’s explanation and expression so well together, it made it easy for me as a reader to accept Luís as they are!
The trauma and mental health aspects, while they weren’t always front and center, were shown at the right times, in my opinion. Marco and Luís, with their own flaws and problems, also showed me the hope and ease that life can have. It really gives me renewed hope in love and how, at least sometimes, life can just be really good. And if or when it crashes down around us, there’s a strength left there to be able to work through it.
Lastly, I want to be very vague here because I definitely don’t want to spoil this MAJOR detail! The ‘big reveal’ as I call it (which people will know about if they’ve read the book - so go read it!) really shocked me! I’m sure it’ll rub people the wrong way, but it honestly didn’t bother me. In fact, I think because I’d gotten to know Marco and Luís more and see them together I was okay with it. They have such a cute relationship!
This may have been my first Elen Chase novel, but I positively HAVE to read the previous books in the series!
