The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry

5.0

(probs more like a 4.5 right now)

First and foremost, the writing of this book was beautiful and witty and captivating. The atmosphere and setting were thick; I was transported away every time I so much as read a page. It's full of intensely interesting thoughts and themes and symbols.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the end or the direction of the overall story but tbf it feels like the kind of book that demands to mulled over and analysed and even reread. (How could you possibly pull it all out in one reading?)

I can see my opinion changing either way over time but for now I was enchanted by this peculiar book and very glad to have read it (even though I feel a little bested by it and crave for an English classroom to do a proper close reading of every page.)
