Ace, Marvel, Spy by Jenni L. Walsh
4.0
An amazing story of a little-known woman in American History. Not only was Alice Marble a tennis ace, winning eighteen grand slams between 1934 and 1940, she was an American patriot and a spy during the war and was an advocate for women her entire life. Because of her the first African American – man or woman – Althea Davis- was able to play in a tennis championship. She also authored stories for Marvel Classics on the Wonder Women in history, Clara Barton, Jane Adams, Sojourner Truth to name a few. The tales of Alice’s struggles in tennis, from a poor teenager to an up-and-coming star and the detailed descriptions of her matches made me feel like I was courtside for many of her games.
