The Hate U Give is a story that parallels many stories that sparked the black lives matter movement.

As a white person I feel like it is not my place to voice my opinion on the subject matter of violence against POC, specifically police violence against black people. For this reason, I am not writing a full review.

This is a great book and you should pick it up. It was intensely heartbreaking and beautiful. It gives insight to how many people of color are forced to live in America today and if you are not a POC, you probably don't truly understand, as I'm sure I do not.

I loved Starr as a character and her internal struggle over what to do was both heartbreaking and inspiring. The only reason that this is getting half a star taken off is because it bothered me how often Starr thought the phrase "If I was into girls." I do not understand why it was in the book so much and I'm not entirely sure why it bugged me, but it did. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the story, even if it broke my heart.

I can't wait to support the movie in a couple weeks and I hope it continues to spark conversation around the subject.
