Behind The Broken by Chloe C. Peñaranda
5.0
When a kidnapping threat is received for Ana, the daughter of a presidential candidate, Rhett ensures that he is hired to become her bodyguard. Ana is a sunshine-y college student who plans on immediately giving her new bodyguard the slip but does he have to be quite so handsome? Rhett carries some deep wounds as a result of the actions of his uncle and will stop at nothing in order to get his vengeance but when he starts falling for Ana, his careful plans may all be falling apart…
This was my second time reading a book from this author so I was quite excited to get stuck in although I was nervous how Peñaranda’s writing would be in a contemporary setting as this is her debut in the genre. Thankfully, my fears were for naught because this book is amazing and I can’t wait for the sequel to be released.
One of the best parts of this book was the subjugation of expectations. Romances tend to be fairly formulaic and that is part of what makes the genre so appealing. The romance of this book does largely follow those familiar beats however Peñaranda uses the dramatic arc to keep tension high throughout the book. The writing is fantastic and for that reason alone, this book is unputdownable HOWEVER the sense of peril ensures you keep reading just a bit more to see how the events unfold.
There were a couple of elements of the story that felt predictable but the execution of the reveals was impeccable and made for an overall enjoyable read.
I am very interested to read part two of this duet later this year as I feel as though the bar has been set pretty high but I also think there are some very interesting pieces that have been laid on the board at the end of this book.
