This book is a masterpiece. Yaa Gyasi packs in so much information into each page. You think you’re reading a character’s childhood memory and then you pause for a moment afterwards and realize that Gyasi just hit you with MAJOR CHILDHOOD FORMING INFORMATION that will absolutely shape and define this character in the next few pages.

I felt as if this novel had three main storylines, and I could have easily read a novel full of stories and information dedicated to each one. I could have walked beside Gifty for hundreds more pages.
