The Hourglass Throne by K.D. Edwards
3.0
Eeeeh. EEK! Hmmm… ?????
Those r the sounds i have made reading that last 20% because uhh Haha what?
there are lots of things im questioning here. much things about lord tower. things about addam and rune. things about addam and rune and brand. things about rune and the majeure. things about the companion bond that we wont get answered bc lord tower is dead or not dead?
First imma talk about the majeure. Okay. I don't know the reason rune used it SO much. Like yes, for lady time and to defeat her. understood. but you also have this competing fact that the majeure takes Brand's life force and rune knew this and im pretty sure it scared him and made him feel extreme guilt when he found this out. It gets complicated because lady time was tied to rune's trauma, and i suppose that was why he wasn't thinking fully about the repercussions? this is my assumption because it isn't exactly stated.
Addam and rune--god where to start. Them getting engaged came out of left field fr. every new level their relationship takes feels like rune compensating for feeling insecure in the way of feeling like he isn't showing his love enough for addam (in other words, the way he shows it for brand.)
In effect, brand and rune's relationship took the backseat for this book which made the entire novel feel off center. what scenes they did get only lasted for a second before addam was involved. im ok with some scenes having him but Every One?? specifically that scene where they found out they were being spied on and rune was asking brand to come to him and it was a moment that Should have been just between them but somehow addam gets involved and he's the one hugging brand instead?...
scenes where brand and rune should've been there were taken over by addam, therefor messing with how the dynamics are .. i get dynamics changed but brand and rune are connected ..forever? brand's always been his priority?
also with max being kidnapped and there wasn't even a proper reunion between him and rune and brand, it was just like Ohh okay everyone's back nowwwww moving on!
max got like 3 lines. which messed with things even more and made it all weird. we didn't get enough of rune being angry that he was taken! brand going off on people! them being desperate! My family has been separated just to put addam at the front when he's never been a main character Ugh.
also not enough quinn in this!! not enough quinn just for him to lose his powers! what Wasss this ! a sacrifice that made no sense bc we didnt get any of his character he was kidnapped more than half the book!
erghhh also dare i say brand being in love with the tower at one point also came out of nowhere??? not sure why the author always counts in these weird crushes when bonds are meant to be parental! like with max and rune at the beginning, and rune and the tower, just weird to me, i didnt like this. and i fear this series is 100% going in the direction of a poly relationship, which i dont think i will enjoy because the bond between rune and brand just feels too great to involve addam :// i cant say i dont enjoy addam’s character because i think he’s a great addition to the series, but he hasnt really had the same amount of development rune and brand have, and so that glaring hint at the end with brand putting the ring on his finger just didnt get me, honestly ..
ok sometimes i forget when i have complaints to put stuff i enjoyed, so here it is: I LOVED THE STUFF W THE MAISE ! Also liked how lady death was featured even more and corinne and diana, this series was in desperate need of women. i also loved rune with the psychometry spell during the revelry. i always enjoy where theres more expansion on the magic of this series and that it progressively stretches as rune comes into his power more and more. i was also very proud of rune for opening up about his past to addam, even though he didnt quite get to do this on his own time. im really hoping he gets to control the way the stuff about brand comes out, And, even though im hoping it never has to, it probably will? I just want rune to get this agency back over his life and its been nice to see him reclaim his throne and even going as far as renaming it and building it the way he sees fit, i really loved that direction.
i also liked the stuff with all the kids tbh. they arent overtaking the storyline in the main books the way they do in the novellas. im just sad max and quinn werent in this more, they were gone for so long the effects of their leave really bled through the more the book went on .
