Re-read review - November 2024
Loved this re-read so very much. This is a deep, thought-provoking story of people and culture, tied into a bit of a mystery to keep things plodding along. The world, the characters… all of it was done masterfully.
I’ve kept my original review below because it’s actually on the nose for how one may look at learning a new culture. Basically, the review is through a lens of personal subjectivity. This story is all about removing that and learning about a culture in a situation that is open and curious, even with huge circumstances in the balance.
*****Original review - March 2020
Didn't really grab me. I also have this weird thing with how I dislike names or labels being weird and complicated... Lots of that in here.
I also found that every paragraph if not every sentence had a word italicized which made me fatigued when reading. Kind of a personal pet peeve.
