Check, Please! Book 1: #Hockey by Ngozi Ukazu
2.0
Check Please is an affable light graphic novel, set in Canada about a young fresman called Eric Bitterman or 'Bitty' for short who loves baking, vlogging and hockey. When he gets accepted to attend the prestigious Samford University, he joins the hockey team, full of excited enthusiasm but unsure of how others will respond to his sexuality. Things become even more complicated when he falls for one of his teammates, leaving him to navigate a sea of emotions whilst also finding solace in his love for making cakes and other treats.
This graphic novel starts with a burst of energy and promises a lot of fun, with a fast-moving plot but it was often hard for me to engage with. The uninspiring use of caricature-like characters felt like an unnecessary attempt at trying to make the novel perfectly reflect college life. In trying to make her characters believable, they ended up coming off as clichéd stereotypes i.e. Holster and Ransom.
To it's credit, the romance developed effortlessly and there was a montage section that did well to convey the anguish that was being illustrated. Speaking of which, the art style was extremely expressive and vivid.
