Sabrina & Corina is a masterpiece. There were no flat, underdeveloped characters. There were no dull, uninteresting plots. This book will have a permanent spot on my bookshelf, and I will recommend this book to anyone asking for a rec. The blurb from Kirkus Revies reads in part, “emotionally wrenching but never without glimmers of resistance and hope.” Indeed.

I finished “Sugar Baby” —the first story!— with tears in my eyes. I clutched my chest and sighed with “Tomi” and “Any Further West.” I would read a novel based off of any of these short stories. I’m thrilled Kali Fajardo-Anstine wrote full-length novel, Woman of Light, being released in June. As soon as I’m done here I’m preordering it.

I tend to struggle enjoying short story collections. I think either the stories ebb and flow in entertainment/power, or they lack a cohesiveness. Neither of those issues are present here. The women, the culture, the story-telling… This collection is like a cup of coffee so strong you could stand a spoon up in it.
