Fame, Fate, and the First Kiss by Kasie West
3.0
Lacey Barnes is an aspiring actress, so when she gets her first role in a low-budget movie, she’s nothing but happy for the experience. But working on the movie means long hours, and not enough time for school. Her dad is constantly on her case, and she feels like he’s out to get her. Then to top it off, someone on set trying to sabotage her. With the help of her new tutor, Donavan, and some friends she trusts, she’s on a mission to find the culprit and to prove herself as an actress. This was actually a decent read. The reader really enjoyed this one over the first novel in this series. We’re following Lacey, who we met in the first book, Abby’s friend. We do see Abby and Cooper in this one, but very briefly, which worked well. Lacey was this reader’s favourite character from the previous book, so seeing her in her own novel was fun. She was a likeable character, who actually had chemistry with the person she had a huge crush on. This had an enemies to lovers plot, although the two were never really enemies, they didn’t exactly like each other to start, and it was fun watching the two of them grow close and trust each other. The little reveals along the way were cute, a tad unrealistic and felt a little fanfiction-y, but it didn’t take the reader too out of the story. As for the plot, it was really well done. The ending felt a little rushed, but the actual mystery plot the author threw in there really caught this reader’s attention and had them flipping, wanting to know who was behind it all. They had their suspicions, because it couldn’t be someone too obvious. Who it ended up being made sense, but at the same time, there was kinda no lead up to it being that person. We could tell the author tried to throw in little snide comments throughout, so that it didn’t feel completely out of left field, but it still felt a little out there. The characters were all well created and had some personality to them; they didn’t feel boring at all. We had a lot of depth to some of them, which made the chemistry work better. The two main characters were great and they grew, too, even the side characters had some growth, which helped the story progress further. In the end, this was a fast-paced novel with good characters and an entertaining mystery plot.
