Daphnis and Chloe by Longus

3.0

The story of Daphnes and Chloe was written by Longus, an ancient Greek writer, in the 2nd century AD. Lamo finds Baby Daphnis abandoned suckling one of his goat and takes the baby to his wife to raise him as their own. Later, a shepherd Dryas finds baby Chloe also alone suckling one of his sheep and he also brings the baby to his wife and raise her as their own. Both men see a dream to bring Daphnis and Chloe together. The youth fall in love with each other, but they have no idea what it is what they are feeling and they are confused. After many bizarre adventures, Daphnis finds his parents, Chloe finds hers, and they seal their love with their marriage. All ends well. (Nothing in this summary is considered a spoiler).

Overall, this strange, but amusing, mythical world of nymphs, Satyrs, gods, and humans was enjoyable despite not being a favorite. The way the story was written made it very hard to believe that Daphnis and Chloe didn't know what it was the attraction they were feeling. Their naivety and ignorance was to the extreme and certain parts of the story felt repetitive. Surprisingly, however, this did not affect my enjoyment of the other aspects of the story. Moreover, there were various other shorter stories narrated by the characters within the main story and I found those very enjoyable. Daphnes and Chloe was a light, quick, and for the most part pleasant reading, but not one that I would choose to reread.
