A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti

5.0

Before I dive into the rest of this, this is easily my favorite title of the year and as it turns out, its profoundly evocative of the novel itself. Annabelle has suffered a terrible trauma and although we are almost to the very end of the book before the full details reveal themselves, her flashbacks slowly clue readers in so that we slowly start to know what is coming. The flashbacks become increasingly heartbreaking--I wanted to reach through the pages and hug her and help her realize that what she was experiencing was not okay--even as her run becomes more difficult and physically challenging. Indeed as Annabelle's heart begins to heal, her body begins to suffer terribly, and I loved the contrast of a girl who learning to step into her own powerful voice and tell her story as her body changed and her world rallied around her more than ever. I cannot tell you why this makes for such an incredibly timely read without spoiling the slow reveal of what happened except to say it is a rare novel that makes me more convicted to make a difference in my own world and to hold those in power accountable for their lack of action on the most pressing problems of our day. Read it ASAP.
