The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz
Did not finish book. Stopped at 10%.
I am sorry but I really do not see the appeal of this book. Oscar's mom is horrible, and the back of the book calls Oscar "sweet". I am sorry...but if Oscar were a tween today he would be so deep on the Reddit Red Pill.
So much misogyny. I was not a huge fan of This Is How You Lose Her and then those allegations came out against him, so I haven't been exactly pumped to try this book out. These things could be making more apt to dump it at only 33 pages, and I am very confident that the book could turn around, but I don't care enough to find out if it does.
A sweet boy does not refer to girls as skank. Nor does he "beat off" to his sisters friends.
I will say one positive...as a person with a Dominican parent, the Spanish bits made me happy, they are written out how they would be said in the DR and I loved that. Except when his mom called his seven year old girlfriend a puta and told him to slap her.
Didn't love that part so much.
