The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith
3.0
This book is fast-paced, action-packed, complex and, theoretically, brilliant - just not for me.
Firstly, I had a hard time falling in love with the characters. For some, I would've liked a backstory or a more personal viewpoint of the events taking place, so I could form a connection. Others simply seemed to lack personal motivation behind their actions. They acted primarily out of duty, not because they put their heart to it, which made it difficult to relate.
Secondly, The "magic" some of the characters were able to perform was used in a disappointing way. We don't really get an explanation what the characters are able to do, so it seems out of the blue and like an easy fix when they use their supernatural abilities to solve a problem.
Apart from that, this was my first high fantasy book in a long time and I think this genre just isn't for me. The supernatural characters and the complex world-builiding distracted me too much and it was harder than usual to connect to the story. I also had problems with the writing style and the vocabulary, since English isn't my first language, which pulled me out of the book a lot. However, these factors are not part of my rating since they're entirely personal.
