Kwame Crashes the Underworld has that perfect mg blend of a fun and grief while on a high stakes magical adventure

this is also one of those books i wish i could have read when i was a kid

content warning: the mc’s grandmother is deceased when the book begins

it was really cool to read an mg fantasy steeped in Ghanaian mythology, more specifically Akan mythology, and travel through Asamando (Ghanaian underworld) with Kwame, Autumn, Ama, and Woo

really it deserves all the stars and everyone should go out and find a copy to read as soon as possible

i would be remiss not to tell you more about Autumn, Kwame’s amazing best friend, who is hard of hearing; she wears hearing aids and she and Kwame communicate both via speech and ASL throughout the entire book, which was super cool to see in a middle grade fantasy adventure story
