What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen
5.0
Sarah Dessen remains one of my favorite authors of all-time with this book. Once again, she made me fall completely in love with the characters and once again, I started to feel bummed when the story was ending.
The story revolves around 17-year-old Mclean who lives with her father after her mom cheated on her dad with the coach of her father's favorite basketball team. They divorced and Mclean realized she didn't want to stay with her mom - especially considering her mom was pregnant with twins at the time. Over the next few years, Mclean and her dad, who works for a restaurant consulting business, make short stops in different towns. It's never longer than 6 months and in each town, she makes up a new persona for herself.
It's not until she lands into this current town that she discovers these personas are just masking her true hurts and pain. This is the first town she becomes Mclean, the first town she develops true friendships, and the first town she falls in love with a boy.
I just adore the way Dessen writes and the way she writes about the high school life SO WELL. It's all truth and honesty and realness, nothing fake or out of place. I loved Mclean and all her hang-ups. I loved her relationship with her father and the way she began to slowly trust Dave with her heart. I loved Deb and all her acronyms. Mclean's mother irritated me a lot in the beginning and the sudden shift towards the end felt a little weird, in my opinion.
Predictable, happy ending but it seemed to work with the plot and themes. A must-read for anyone who loves YA fiction!
