Ο Κατάδικος by Κωνσταντίνος Θεοτόκης, Konstantinos Theotokis, Konstantinos Theotokis
5.0
O Katathikos, or The Convict in English, written in 1919, is another superb novella by one of the greatest authors in modern Greek literature, and certainly one of my very favorite writers, Konstantinos Theotokis.
It is a psychological exploration of several social and interpersonal themes reminiscent of Dostoyevsky, as Theotokis deals with such issues as, to name a few, prejudice; goodness and honesty in a cruel and dishonest, hypocritical world; the role of God and faith in such a world; crime, conscience, and the possibility of redemption through repentance; love and sacrifice; justice and injustice; the faults of the court system of the time... etc.
I don't know if these works are translated into English, but I wish they had, and it saddens me that Modern Greek Literature is not as well known and praised as it is the Ancient Greek Literature. Modern Greek Literature undeniably deserves its own special place in the realm of World Literature anthologies along with the other greater authors of the 19th and early 20th century.
