Catch-22 by Joseph Heller

5.0

“Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can’t stop them from doing.”

Finishing this novel on the eve of Trump’s second inauguration emphasized the timeless nature and modern relevancy. Catch-22 is immensely funny, with some of the sharpest dialogue and irony I’ve ever experienced. The general buffoonery and circular language used by every authority figure creates a sit-com style humor for many of the early chapters. But when these figures slowly begin to gain control, more explicit details are revealed, and the stark and grim nature of war is brought to life. As I brace myself for the next four years and the increased rise of fascism within this country, I find a lot of parallels of this novel with the current political climate of the US.
