A Dark and Drowning Tide by Allison Saft

5.0

“There’s time.” Sylvia cradled her jaw, a fond smile playing at her lips. “I want you however I can have you, I want you brutal, and I want you tender, and I want you at your best and your worst. Saints. I want you, Lorelei, and I —“

Lorelei kissed her again, hard enough to bruise. Desire ran through her like a knife, so sharp it was almost painful.

firstly, and most importantly, gorgeous gorgeous writing. it’s the thing that stuck out to me before anything else but a dark and drowning tide promised me a cocktail of everything i enjoy and delivered it beyond my expectations. sapphic fantasy academic rivalry, sexually tense arguments, murder mystery and political intrigue, and it also sets a gripping pace that held me hostage to the story till the very end. it feels cliché to say i couldn’t put it down, but that’s what best explains how i felt about this. it’s magical and intimate, and i feel like i just have to say it again: the lyrical, atmospheric writing captured my heart just as much as lorelei did. for a standalone fantasy it did a wonderful job of weaving together all these elements (magic, academia, mystery, politics, action, romance) tightly into a single masterpiece. also mouth-wateringly sensual.
